One hundred years before the birth
of Christ the Romans built the Via Augusta and erected the famous
Arch of
Triumph, (Arc de Barà), in the area
where the town of Roda de Barà now sits. It was well known even
then for its privileged geographical position between the
mountain range, just inland, and the sea, and for its pleasant
climate. Today, Roda de Barà is a town which combines
agriculture (carob trees, almond trees and olive groves) and
service industries, and it has become an important residential
area with beautifully-kept gardens and homely urban developments.
This idyllic environment offers water-sports (sailing, water-skiing, windsurfing) reaping the benefit of its long beach of fine golden sand. Alternatively you can play other sports (volleyball, basketball, football, etc.) in its new sport and leisure centre. You can stroll through the town centre taking in the neoclassical Parish of Saint Bartholomew dating from the l7th century, with its l8th century stone facade and l9th century bell-tower, or go on excursions in the area to visit the l8th century Hermitage of Barà, the Chapel of Mas Carreras from the first third of this century and other picturesque parts of Catalonia.
By rail or by road, via the A-7 Motorway or the 340 Dual Carriageway, Roda de Barà has easy access to both Barcelona (80 km) and Tarragona (20 km).
